The Little Things
Like me, I imagine other creatives to be aware of and infatuated with ‘the little things’. Those small aspects of our day, while creating or not, that bring inspiration and gift moments of mindfulness; the snapshots we capture in our minds so we don’t forget the way the light poured in or the aroma of the space. Things like:
The cackling of the wood stove on a cold, February morning
The sound of rain falling on the tin roof as I carve a mug
Splatters of clay on the window in front of the wheel
The excitement and anticipation in opening a kiln
Artwork scattered in various stages around the room, waiting their turn to be fired
How our pets walk cautiously around pieces, careful not to disturb them
The view of giant spruce trees swaying from every window.
These otherwise unseen moments are what bring peace and meaning to my days as a studio artist. If I cannot enjoy my space and those I share it with, what’s the point?
Here’s to creating and recognizing our own art oasis’s, full of the little things that make us slow down and express gratitude.
